100 Fire Rangers Now On Kenora Fire 71; More Fires Spark In Red Lake Area

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is throwing major resources at a wild fire burning about 23-kilometres northwest of Whitedog First Nation.

Right now more than 100-firefighters from several different provinces are helping to battle the blaze, which is now listed at almost 9,200 hectares in size.

A base camp has been established in Minaki and heavy bucket helicopters are helping fire crews on the ground to try and bring the stubborn lightning caused fire under control.

The blaze forced the evacuation of some 80-people due to heavy smoke in the community.

They are being housed in Rat Portage First Nation.

Meantime, there were eight new fires reported Sunday across northwestern Ontario.

Five of the blazes sparked in the Red Lake district.

All are small in nature and burning near various lakes.

A 250-hectare fire also ignited near Croal Lake, about 60-kilometres northwest of Webequie First Nation.

There are 76-active fires in the region, 13 that are considered not under control.

The fire hazard remains moderate to high across the northwest.
