Melanie Joly will not run for Liberal leadership

Another speculated contender is out of the federal Liberal leadership race.

Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly confirmed her intentions today.

“While I know I am ready to become the first woman to lead the Liberal Pary of Canada, I must also recognize that the current international situation, especially the unjustified threat of tariffs and other economic pressures from the President of the United States, requires a fire and urgent response,” Joly says in a letter posted to social media.

She adds that she must dedicate every minute of her time and energy to defending the interests of Canadians.

This comes under a current strained relationship between Canada and the United States over the threat of tariffs on Canadian goods.

Finance Minister Dominic Leblanc also confirmed this week, he will not run in the federal Liberal leadership race.
