Minister describes message from Mark Carney as uplifting

Federal ministers emerged from a caucus meeting this week with the new federal Liberal leader with renewed spirits.

Mark Carney met with the Liberal caucus on Monday as he began his new role as the party leader and prime minister designate.

“I think he represents a different style of leadership. I think people are really excited about him. I think he brings a lot of humour, which I really appreciate,” Indigenous Services Minister Patty Hajdu expressed to reporters as she emerged from the meeting on Monday.

“He’s also a really serious leader. He’s had some really significant experiences with very difficult situations, and I think that’s exactly what our country needs right now.”

Transport Minister Anita Anand says Carney’s message to caucus was uplifting.

“We gotta fight and win the next election together, and in order to do that we need to be unified. Everybody in the room was right there with him, so we’ll be strong going forward,” said Anand.

“It’s going to be quite the force in the election. We have to stand strong for Canada, and we have to fight for progressive values, and that’s what we will do as a team, as a united team. If last night showed us anything, it is that the liberal team is united.”

Carney was chosen on Sunday to become the next Liberal leader of Canada with 85 per cent of the vote.

He is expected to be sworn in as prime minister by the governor general in the coming days.

The next federal election is currently scheduled for October, but some have speculated Carney will call it to be held earlier than that.
