Voters have less than two weeks to decide where to mark the X on their federal election ballot.
Should Canadians be voting for who they want to serve as their MP in the upcoming federal election, or the political party that will oversee the country?
UPEI Political Science Professor Don Desserud expects they’ll be contemplating both.
“The stakes are quite high, so I suspect that most people are looking at the leaders right now. They’re trying to assess what’s the best way to deal with what we’re now calling the Canadian existential problem, which is our relationship with the United States and our own sense of identity,” Desserud says.
“It’s not a question of whether one leader is necessarily better than the other. They each have a different approach, and voters are looking at those approaches and trying to decide which is the best one.”
Desserud says Canadians are also looking at who they’d like to have in their riding.
“Voters would like to see cabinet ministers representing their ridings. So that’s the other calculation they may be making, because they’d like to see their community represented as well,” Desserud adds.
Canadians will go to the polls on April 28.
