Red Shoes Day

Monday, September 9th marks Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day across Canada.

FIREFLY is among the groups involved in raising awareness and staff across the Kenora district are involved by hosting Red Shoes Day.

Occupation Therapist Stephanie Runtz says a number of resources are available in area communities to support victims, including mental health services.

Runtz says FASD is an invisible disability, noting the infliction doesn’t get the attention it needs.

September 9th is selected as FASD Awareness Day because the 9th day of the 9th month represents the 9 months of a normal pregnancy.

Red Shoes were worn for the first time in 2013, as a way to be noticed and talk to strangers about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.
