Mining is getting some attention at Queen’s Park.
Northern Development and Mines Minister Greg Rickford met with representatives of a Mining Working Group yesterday. (Tuesday)
Rickford says they discussed ways of attracting new investments and reducing the regulatory burdens on the industry.
“This calls on the Premier’s office, the Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development as well as the Minister of the Environment, importantly, to attend panels with the Ontario Mining Association, working with them on the challenges or the prospects, as we like to say.”
The meeting coincided with an annual Meet the Miners Day at the legislature.
The Kenora-Rainy River MPP says the province is committed to improving the competitiveness of Ontario’s mining industry.
“We want to translate those financial investments into activities up north. That’s why we’re working closely with companies to push them across the starting line and get digging.”
According to Rickford’s office, Ontario is Canada’s number one mineral producer, generating $10.1 billion worth of minerals in the past year while creating more than 26,000 direct and 50,000 indirect jobs across the province.
