Fire Safety Support For Lac Seul

An exciting partnership between Firefighters Without Borders and Lac Seul to ensure community members are prepared for a fire emergency.

The registered charitable organization sent two fire prevention officers from Mississauga last week to Lac Seul to share proper delivery methods of fire safety and prevention information for emergency volunteers and firefighters.

In turn, members were able to educate the 872 residents and students on fire prevention and fire safety.

The group’s Vice President Crag Dockeray fire alarms were also installed in each home that didn’t have one.

Dockeray says the First Alert donated 200 smoke alarms and supplemented its donation with discount pricing to help ensure each resident is protected.

He stresses it’s imperative that they help and assist communities like Lac Seul.

Dockeray notes recent studies have shown that residents of First Nation communities are ten times more likely to die in a house fire than those living in the rest of Canada.

Lac Seul First Nation Fire Chief David Gordon says “We are very grateful for the volunteers traveling from Firefighters Without Borders to Lac Seul to discuss fire safety with our firefighters and our community.

This isn’t the first time the organization has assisted fire prevention efforts in the northern First Nation community.

Dockeray says earlier this year, a fire truck, fire equipment and training were donated by the City of St. Catharines to Lac Seul First Nation.
