20 years ago today, an Air Canada pilot managed to avert disaster while crossing over Sunset Country.
Robert Pearson was behind the control on the miraculous landing of Flight 143, better known as the Gimli glider.
His Boeing 767 ran out of fuel while flying from Montreal to Edmonton.
The jet ran out of gas at 41,000 feet over Red Lake, managing to glide to the old Gimli Air Base north of Winnipeg for a safe landing.
