Dryden Teen Trying To End Violence Against Women

A new Domestic Violence Against Women petition and awareness campaign has been launched in our area.

It’s being organized by Dryden High School Grade 12 student Brooklyn Tremblay.

Tremblay says women were always considered weak, vulnerable and in a position to be exploited.

“Violence has always long been accepted as something that happens to women. It’s considered by many as acceptable in society but to me its continued existence is sickening.”

Tremblay says “We could be a part of the solution by joining and advocating. Volunteering and supporting women’s organizations, allowing them to continue their services for women who experience abuse or violence and to do more.”

She says it’s important for everyone to be aware of the problem and explore how we can use our powers to end violence against women and make a lasting difference.

“Growing up, watching how differently women were treated, whether that was careers or the comments I’ve seen sexually towards women, it’s made me realize that there needs to be more awareness of this issue and more funding towards organizations helping these women.”

There is a fundraising component to her campaign with funds supporting local anti-violence organizations and initiatives.

Tremblay is also urging more youth to get involved in the conversation.

“I haven’t really seen much talk about this issue in high school. It increases the ability of youth to recognize violence and transform our knowledge into action and it contributes to changing systems to aid rather than impede an end to violence against girls and women.”
