Herman Deitz

Herman Deitz joined the Royal Winnipeg Rifles at 18 in 1940.

He was transferred to the Navy a year later when he was heard talking German.

The military wanted him on the ships so he could interpret the messages and prisoners.

Hermzn was in the Navy for 5 yrs.

On D-Day he was on the HMCS Matene.

(Matane” is credited with helping to sink two U-Boats and she was at D-Day

Shortly after D-Day, Matene was hit by a German ‘glider bomb’ and was laid up for several months for repairs.)
