Ceremony Held To Kick-Start Highway Twinning

A special ceremony was held Friday in honor of four first nations’ giving consent for the first phase of the twinning of the Trans-Canada Highway west of Kenora.

In early May, Rat Portage, Shoal Lake #40, The Dalles, and Washagamis Bay agreed to let the double-laning project proceed.

Jennifer Graham Harness is the assistant deputy minister at the Ministry of Transportation and says this is a special occasion for her.

“As a person who strives to build our transportation system, I’m proud of what has been accomplished and thrilled that we’re here today.”

The sacred ceremony was held virtually.

Work on the first phase, which will include the stretch of Highway 17 from the Ontario/Manitoba boundary to Highway 673 is expected to begin by this fall.
