OPP Warn Of Romance Scams

Valentine’s Day is considered the most romantic day of the year, but the OPP is taking the opportunity to warn about romance scams.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Center says last year, there were over $59 million lost due to romance scams in Canada, and $20 million of those losses were in Ontario.

The OPP says the losses are in addition to the mental health trauma of being scammed.

Also, there has be a rise in scams losses in Canada.

Last year alone, $530 million was lost by victims.

That’s a 40 percent increase from the year before.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Center adds that only 5 to 10 percent of people report being the victim of a scam.
