23 Recommendations Made Following Inquest

A jury has determined the death of a northwestern Ontario man to be suicide.
Evidence heard during the inquest showed 27-year-old Bruce Moonias died of a gunshot wound to the abdomen after being brought to Thunder Bay in the winter of 2006.
Moonias was involved in an incident with police in Lansdowne House First Nation in which he was holed up in a home alone for several hours.
Counsel to the Coroner Leonard Kim says he’s satisfied with the verdict as the jurors were very careful in the consideration of the evidence.
The ruling included 23-recommendations on how to improve psychiatric help in aboriginal communities.
Kim says some of the recommendations should be strongly considered.
He stresses there are gaps in mental health services for aboriginals living in remote communities.
Other suggestions include improved communications, and weapons storage.
