25th Anniversary Of 1363 Crash

Today is the 25th anniversary of one of the most infamous air disasters in Canadian history.
Air Ontario flight 1363 crashed near the Dryden Airport killing 24-people. The crash occurred when the aircraft stalled while attempting to take off from the Dryden Airport at about 12:40, Friday, March 10.
Fire Chief Ken Kurz was on call that day and he reflects back on the incident.
Kurz says it wasn’t an ordinary day and it was worse than anyone could imagine.
Kurz notes the first priority was rescuing those who couldn’t walk and they managed to carry out about 20 individuals.
He notes the incident reinforced the importance of emergency preparedness and notes they actually held training earlier that day.
The crash changed airline industry safety procedures.
Airport Manager Norm Sanders says the memorial site will be plowed and cleared for those wanting to pay tribute to those who perished in the crash.
