COVID Numbers Soar In Our Area

The Northwestern Health Unit is reporting a huge jump in COVID cases in one specific Health Hub.

The weekly update shows 329 active high risk cases, 307 of which come from the Sioux Lookout district.

Officials say 288 are on-reserve and 19 are off-reserve.

There were only 112 total cases reported last week.

Breakdown (Health Hub):

-Sioux Lookout (on-reserve): 288
-Sioux Lookout (off-reserve): 19
-Kenora: 11
-Fort Frances: 6
-Red Lake: 2
-Rainy River: 2
-Atikokan: 1

Local health officials note the numbers are lower than the ‘real’ number due to the fact many people are not eligible for PCR testing and instead test positive on Rapid Antigen tests at home and are not counted in the total.

Despite the spike the 7-day test positivity rate has gone down slightly.

It now sits at 9.7% compared to 10% in last weeks report.
