Local Politicians On National Indigenous Peoples Day

Local politicians are taking time to recognize National Indigenous Peoples Day.

Kiiwetinoong MPP-elect Sol Mamakwa says, “It is a day to celebrate our ways of life, our teachings and our languages. We recognize the many challenges we go through to maintain our ways of life and the importance of doing so.”

Mamakwa adds, “I encourage everyone to take the time to reflect, not only our history and struggles, but on our future we envision for our children and our children’s children. How we will continue to care for our lands, our languages and our shared wellbeing.”

Kenora-Rainy River MPP-elect Greg Rickford says the day gives us a chance to learn more about the rich and diverse heritage, culture, language, traditions and experiences of First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples who have helped shape our past and continue to shape our future.

Rickford adds, “It is also an opportunity to deepen our collective understanding of the legacy of Indian Residential Schools, which is an important step towards meaningful reconciliation.”
