Wabigoon Lake Student Receives $10,000 Scholarship

Two local students have been recognized by Hydro One.

Crystal Harrison-Collin of Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation (Indigenous Studies at Laurentian University) and Christy Howell of Couchiching First Nation (Business Administration and Human Resources at Lakehead University) are the 2022 recipients of the Leonard S. (Tony) Mandamin Scholarship.

They are two of just 20 in Ontario to receive $10,000 and an opportunity to complete a paid work term at Hydro One.

The scholarship is named after the Honourable Justice Leonard S. Tony Mandamin, one of the first Indigenous electrical engineering graduates in the province.

Penny Favel is the Vice President of Indigenous Relations at Hydro One and says they are committed to meaningful progress along the pathway to reconciliation, ensuring First Nations representation at the utility.

Favel adds they strive to build new partnerships for training, community initiatives and economic development.

Students interested in applying for the scholarship can visit: Hydro One Awards

Applications are due by August 1, November 1 and February 1 of each year.
