Flood clean-up efforts are underway in Sioux Lookout.
Clerk Brian MacKinnon notes this is just the beginning of a long clean-up process and cautions that lake levels are still far above normal levels, and it may still be many weeks before the extent of all damages can truly be assessed.
The costs of flood mitigation in the community this spring have already surpassed the $200,000 mark, and will continue to rise as clean-up efforts begin and options for permanent infrastructure changes, such as raising road surfaces, are planned and implemented.
MacKinnon says a lot of work needs to be done as a number of Municipal properties have been covered in debris, much like waterfront businesses and homes.
The initial focus will be on Municipal parks, trails, boat launches, and other areas.
The Municipality of Sioux Lookout is now assisting in clean-up efforts as flood waters continue to recede.
Tipping fees to dispose of flood-related waste at the landfill will be waved but you must register by calling Public Works at 737-1234 or emailing pwadmin@siouxlookout.ca with your name, address, phone number, and email address.
Landfill hours are Tuesday and Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Sand bags will also be picked up from homes and businesses but once again you will have to sign-up.
To register for both services visit Sioux Lookout Public Works
Officials note pallets of sandbags to be picked up must be properly stacked and left near the edge of a roadway or driveway, where they are easily accessible by forklift.
If you have had railway ties wash up onto your property, they can be brought to a designated storage location at the landfill at no cost but can’t be mixed in with other waste for disposal.
