A balanced offensive attack and a shutdown defence propelled the Dryden Eagles High School Football team to a convincing 20-0 victory over visiting West Kildonan Friday afternoon at Harry McMaster Field.
The Eagles set the tone on the opening play of the game as they marched down the field and chewed up the clock before Carter Gustafson powered his way to a 4 yard touchdown run.
Dryden mixed it up shortly after as Dean Iwanyk found Shalom Powell on a quick pass and the Wolverines couldn’t account for the speed of the running-back as he went 60 yards for another major.
Powell would do it again in the second quarter with an explosive 55 yard scamper before he was brought down at the one yard line.
Dean Iwanyk closed things out with a touchdown run to give Dryden an 18-0 lead.
Iwanyk and Emmerson Moir, combined with a solid running game, controlled things from there with several key plays on the ground and through the air with the receivers making some critical catches at key times.
Shalom Powell would kick two singles off of punts in the second half to give them 20 points.
On the other side of the ball, what has become known as an aggressive and physical defence completely shutdown a balanced Wolverines offensive plan.
West Kildonan could only manage a handful of first downs and was never able to gain any momentum.
Dryden picked-up a couple of key interceptions and forced multiple turnovers on downs.
The Wolverines were able to get into deep Eagles territory late in the game including a visit to the Red Zone thanks to two major penalties.
However, the Eagles defence responded with two fumble recoveries to preserve the shutout.
Dryden now improves to 4-1.
The final regular season game at home is Friday, October 14 against Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute Maroons at 3:00 pm.
