The Ontario government has reached a four year deal with the Ontario Association of Optometrists.
Northern Development Minister Greg Rickford says he’s glad an agreement was finally reached.
“They some time ago agreed to dial down the storefront political action and enter into serious negotiations with the government that were confidential and protected the interest of the parties,” explains Rickford.
“I think that agreement reflects that very professional nature of the optometrists.”
Rickford adds that the agreement comes after lengthy talks that started over a year and a half ago.
“We’re all getting older and can relate, I think, the important services they provide. I’m happy for local optometrists. Most reached out to me and we had very cordial and substantive discussions.”
But the opposition is already finding flaws in the deal, saying some seniors will only be eligible for an eye exam every 18 months, instead of every 12 months that was in the previous agreement.
