The province insists people that don’t have OHIP card will still be eligible for medical treatment at 75 treatment centers.
That’s according to the Health Minister Sylvia Jones.
“We are returning to a funding model that existed pre-pandemic that ensured individuals who do not have an up-to-date OHIP card, have access,” Jones told MPP’s at Queen’s Park.
But NDP’s Health Critic France Gelinas the opposite is happening as of April 1st.
“These people are Ontarians like you and I. They are not able to get an OHIP card because of systemic barriers. How is a homeless person supposed to go to Service Ontario with a proof an address? They are homeless, but they deserve care.”
Gelinas says the changes mean the province is cutting medical coverage for uninsured people.
