Sioux Narrows hunter faces hefty fine

A Sioux Narrows man faces a large fine for illegal hunting.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says John Hayberg has pleaded guilty after killing a white tailed deer on private property.

Court heard that back in November of 2020, Hayberg saw a buck bedded down on someone’s front lawn in a built up area of Sioux Narrows.

This was an area where the discharge of firearms is also prohibited.

He left his vehicle and while standing on the shoulder of the road he killed the deer.

Hayberg then trespassed onto private property and retrieved the buck.

He’s been fined $8,000 for careless use of a firearm and trespassing for the purpose of hunting.

The deer and his rifle were also seized.

His hunting licence has been suspended for two years and has to take the Ontario Hunter Education Course before being able to purchase another hunting licence.

He is also prohibited from possessing firearms or hunting equipment in an area where game is found.
