Let’s go back in time…….
39 years ago today it was August 25th, 1987.
What was happening back then?? What were you doing?
In North America, “La Bamba” by Los Lobos was the #1 song.
In the UK, Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” was at the top of the charts.
Madonna was performing in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on her Who’s That Girl World Tour.
Popular films included The Living Daylights (the James Bond film starring Timothy Dalton) and The Untouchables.
Television audiences were watching shows such as Dallas, Growing Pains, and the newly launched Married… with Children.
In the world of radio the changes since August 25th, 1987 have been astronomical.
The transition from vinyl and carts to digital automation.
The rise and fall of CDs.
The arrival of the internet and social media.
Countless elections, storms, community events, fundraisers, sports championships, and local stories shared on CKDR across Northwestern Ontario and beyond.
Generations of listeners who first heard me on-air as kids and now some of them…..are grandparents!! That….is something.
Yes….39 years ago today I started my broadcasting career at CKDR. When I started we were known as Northwoods Radio, then Sunset Country Radio and eventually CKDR.
When I first started my career at CKDR back in 1987 my plan was to get my feet wet so to speak and then to reach out to larger centres to try and make a bigger impact and to further my footprint in broadcasting. Today and everyday I am incredibly grateful that I am not a good planer!
Northwestern Ontario has always been my home since the day I was born…..in Cochenour! Did you know that?! It’s true.
So I just wanted to take a few lines to reflect and thank you for being a part of my day every day……my story for 39 years at CKDR.
Thank you for doing what you do to help make a difference and to those who have let me share their story.
Thank you for letting me be a part of your mornings, your commutes, your workdays, and community life.
Without you there is no me doing this….what ever this is. Some days I wonder. I’m sure you do as well.
And with all that being said….because I still wonder….I continue 39 years later, wondering who’s story I will help tell next on CKDR?
What’s going on in Sunset Country? I’m still here to help share…because of you.
