Hefty fines for illegal walleye catch

A Sioux Lookout man faces hefty fines for an illegal catch of walleye.

Court heard that last June conservation officer were doing inspections at the Sioux Lookout train station.

They found that Robert Whalen had 17 walleye over the legal limit.

He had just returned from a fishing trip to a lake near Allenwater, midway between Sioux Lookout and Armstrong.

$6,600 in fines were levied for possession of fish packed in a manner that could not easily be counted and possession of fish skinned in a manner that could not easily be identified.

In addition to the fines, Whalen is prohibited from fishing for one year.
