Minister Freeland to have special meeting Friday over Albertas proposal to pull out of CPP

There will be a special meeting this Friday with Finance Ministers across the country to discuss Alberta’s proposal to withdraw from Canada’s Pension Plan (CPP).

Federal Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said many are concerned.

“For six decades, the CPP has been the bedrock of a secure and dignified retirement for Canadians, very much including the people of Alberta,” Freeland said.

Freeland added the Alberta Federation of Labour said the move would be ‘truly scary’ for anyone contemplating a safe and stable retirement.

Meantime, the Calgary Chamber of Commerce said “altering Alberta’s pension system could compromise labour mobility, stability for businesses and consumers and investor confidence.”

Freeland said protecting the pension of all Canadians is a priority for our government.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote a letter to the Premier of Alberta, Danielle Smith, slamming the proposal, saying the federal government will fight for the stability of the Canada Pension Plan.

Smith says the decision whether Alberta will pull out of CPP, should be up to Albertans.
