An extension has been granted for the public inquiry looking into foreign interference in the federal electoral process.
“The Commissioner of the Public Inquiry into Foreign Interference in Federal Electoral Processes and Democratic Institutions, Justice Marie-Josée Hogue, has written to the Privy Council Office (PCO) requesting an extension to the timeline for the delivery of her first report. Upon learning of her request, we shared a copy of the letter with the opposition parties,” says Minister of Public Safety, Democratic Institutions and Intergovernmental Affairs Dominic Leblanc.
The Government of Canada has agreed to grant the Commissioner the extension and the first report will now be delivered on May 3, 2024.
The inquiry was launched to examine and assess interference by China, Russia, and other foreign states or nonstate actors, including any potential impacts, to confirm the integrity of, and any impacts on, the 43rd and 44th federal general elections at the national and electoral district levels.
