WestJet cancels flights in advance of possible maintenance staff strike

You’ll want to check your WestJet flight this week to ensure it is taking off.

WestJet has begun cancelling flights as the company and its maintenance workers are at opposite ends over a contract.

Forty flights on Tuesday and Wednesday were called off, affecting around 6,500 customers.

This decision comes as the airline awaits an intervention under the Canada Labour Board.

On Monday, WestJet requested that the Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) and Minister of Labour intervene under the Canada Labour Code.

This process would refer WestJet and the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association to arbitration for a first collective agreement. It would also prevent any labour action by either party.

The union issued a strike notice with a work stoppage possible as early as Thursday evening.
