85 people have gone through a training program offered by the Sioux Lookout Friendship Accord Economic Development Corporation.
Money for the program was provided by Ontario’s Skills Development Fund intake #5.
Participants were trained in the trucking, mining and other in demand sectors.
The Sioux Lookout training agency worked with Northern College and other local employers to offer programs that met their specific needs.
A total of 12 employers were involved in the training along with 15 First Nations.
Jake Dockstator is the Executive Director of the SLFA says the training fills a specific need in the region.
“Northwestern Ontario is on the cusp of a transformative period of economic development and investment, with a considerable need for local skilled workers that can support mining, extraction, trucking, and other services” says Dockstator.
“From surface mining drilling, to AZ/DZ truck driving, the demand for skilled workers from the First Nations and communities we serve is in high demand.”
The SLFA also says it exceeded its enrolment targets.
Of the 85 students, 60 were in the underserviced groups, like woman, youth and Indigenous participants.
