Suspect dead and Winnipeg Police officer recovering after incident

A Winnipeg police officer is recovering after being stabbed in the neck.

According to a news release, it happened on Sunday evening during a project as part of a retail theft initiative on Portage Avenue.

Winnipeg Police Services Acting Chief Art Stannard says police were dealing with a man in the area of a bus shelter.

The male suspect was also shot and died of his injuries.

The police officer was taken to the hospital and treated for injuries.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has been notified to further probe the incident.

More details will be released during a news conference to be held by Winnipeg Police Services on Monday morning.
