Aboriginal Cancer Report

A new report shows that risk factors for cancer are much higher among aboriginal people and especially those living on first nations.

The report was compiled by the Chiefs of Ontario and Cancer Care Ontario and shows smoking rates are much higher among aboriginal adults and teens than the rest of the population.

It also suggests there is a higher prevalence of obesity.

In terms of healthy eating, only 12% of men and 20% of women on First Nations eat vegetables at least four times a day.

Overall the report finds that urgent action is needed to improve the health of Ontario’s aboriginal population and practical action is needed to encourage healthier lifestyles.
