Aboriginal Education Under The Microscope

A new report says Ontario schools aren’t doing enough to educate aboriginal students about their cultures and histories.
The study by People for Education says half of elementary schools and 41% of high schools that were surveyed don’t have aboriginal education opportunities.
The Ontario curriculum includes mandatory and optional learning about First Nations, Metis and Inuit histories, cultures and contributions.
But the study says many schools appear to assume that they only need to offer it if they have a large number of aboriginal students.
The study says 82% of aboriginal students in Ontario attend provincially funded schools.
