The province says it won’t stop mining companies from staking claims to Crown land while it overhauls the 100-year-old Mining Act.

There are growing calls for an immediate moratorium on exploration that doesn’t have the blessing of First Nations.

Minister of Northern Development and Mines Michael Gravelle says the Liberals are committed to changing the law to include proper consultation with First Nations.

But he says that will take time, and in the meantime the government isn’t going to stop mining companies from continuing their explorations.
