Drug and alcohol use among young people is dropping in Ontario.
However, the rates in northern Ontario are still higher than the provincial average.
A new report from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health finds the provincial number of users of cannabis down to 9%, smoking 7% and alcohol falling to 42%.
The numbers in our region are 12% for smoking and 65% for alcohol use.
Spokesperson Dr. Hayley Hamilton says increased educational campaigns and public health efforts appear to be working.
Hamilton says a lot of resources have been invested into encouraging students not to use drugs as well as educating them about the potential risks.
The Centre also found fewer youth drinking and driving.
