AFN Chief Discouraged Water Targets Will Be Missed

The National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations says First Nations are frustrated, yet not surprised, with a federal admission that it won’t be able to lift all boil water advisories by its target deadline of next March.

Perry Bellegarde says Indigenous leaders have good reason to be disappointed given the current government has been in office for over five years.

Bellegarde says there has been significant progress in recent years, but clearly it’s not enough.

He is hopeful the water issues will be corrected with a new $1.5 billion announcement.

According to the AFN, there are 59 long-term advisories in place, 75% of them impacting Ontario communities.
