The former grand chief of Treaty Three has come up short in his bid to become the leader of the Assembly of First Nations.
Leon Jourdain finished third in voting out of three candidates at the National Assembly in Winnipeg Wednesday afternoon.
The Lac La Croix First Nation Chief received 35 votes from delegates, well behind Perry Bellegarde, who secured the majority win with 291 votes on the one and only ballot.
Bellegarde is the Chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations and former regional Vice-Chief for the AFN.
The AFN’s top job has been vacant since the sudden resignation in May of Shawn Atleo.
Bellegarde has been the interim national chief since Atleo’s resignation and he will have an extra six months added to his three-year term.
