Ontario’s Minister of Children, Community and Social Services is promising immediate action on a coroner’s report on the deaths of children in care.
Of the 12 deaths investigated, eight were aboriginal youth from northern communities and eight committed suicide.
The report has five recommendations including improved mental health services.
Minister responsible Lisa McLeod says there also needs to be improved co-ordination of services for youth in care.
McLeod says she is currently engaging with the Ontario Child Advocate, the Coroner, Indigenous and community leaders as well as the LGBTQ community.
She stresses the buck stops with her and is promising more inspections of homes across the province.
