AMO Seeks Hike In HST

A municipal lobby group is calling for a one per hike in the HST in Ontario.

The Association of Municipalities of Ontario says the money could be used to help fund municipal infrastructure projects.

President Lynn Dollin says Ontario municipalities will face a funding gap of nearly 5 billion over the next decade.

To cover that gap, Dollin says municipalities would have to raise taxes by 8 per cent per year over the next decade.

She says AMO looked at 40 different options to raise more money for cash strapped municipalities with the HST hike coming out has the best option.

AMO is now asking municipalities to support the plan as a united front to convince government of the need for the increase.
