Children on Ontario school buses could be buckling up if Transport Canada recommends installing seatbelts.
The Province has introduced the idea but area bus operator Jim Dunfrey says students are already safe.
Dunfrey says the negatives outweigh the positives when it comes to installing seatbelts.
He believes kids would have a difficult time getting out if there was a serious accident.
He notes there is enough room between the seats to cushion a student if a bus was hit from the front.
Meantime, the Province has introduced Legislation to raise the maximum fine for passing a school bus when its red lights are flashing.
The fine could jump from $500 to $2000.
Dunfrey says that won’t deter drivers and people would fight the fine in court resulting in an overcrowded system.
He believes strict enforcement is needed instead.
