ATV Rules Relaxed

Changes are coming to the use of off-road vehicles.

Starting on July 1st, two-up all-terrain vehicles and side-by-side ATV’s will be allowed to use the shoulder of public roads.

Drivers must hold at least a G2 or M2 driver’s licence, and their vehicle must be registered and insured.

Riders of all ages will have to wear a helmet and “use a seatbelt or foot rests, where applicable.”

There will be a two-month education period lasting until September 1st, before officers begin ticketing those breaking the new rules.

However, during this time, police may still lay charges through a summons.

The government consulted with trail, municipal, industry, enforcement and health and safety officials before approving the change.

However, municipalities will still have to pass bylaws allowing ATV’s on municipal road and highway shoulders.
