Basic Income Pilot Project Now In Operation

400-people are now enrolled in a provincial pilot program that will see them receive a basic income every month for the next three years.

The only northwestern Ontario location for the test is in Thunder Bay.

Minister of the Poverty Reduction Strategy Peter Milczyn says they are starting slow, with only four communities involved right now, stressing they want to ensure they are doing everything right.

Milczyn says they will be engaging communities and participants to gauge the success of the initiative.

He says area agencies have been helping recruit individuals.

The province expects to have at least 4,000 people involved when all is said and done.

The program will see selected individuals receive almost $17,000 a year, or $24,000 for a couple.
