The Provincial Government is being urged to forget about the costly
Bear Wise program and instead reinstate the spring bear hunt.
The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters is again leading the campaign after
recent bear scares in both Southern and Northern Ontario.
Spokesperson Robert Pye says it’s become a serious safety and economic
problem.
Pye says there was a 500% jump in nuisance bears since the
hunt was cancelled while Manitoba has had no increase with a spring hunt over the
same time period.
He is concerned that it will take a serious injury or even a death
for the Government to pay attention.
