Changes are coming to Hydro One and the way you can buy beer in Ontario.
Premier Kathleen Wynne says the province will sell off 60% of the provincial utility to help pay the costs of road and sewer improvements along with transit services.
Wynne says the move will help generate $4-billion and is a necessary move to deal with the critical needs the province is facing.
She points out northern Ontario needs to have four lane highways.
There’s also a change to the way beer will be purchased.
The province will be allowing the sale of beer at grocery stores and they have a new agreement with the Beer Store to enhance services.
Wynne says this will be the biggest change to the liquor laws since the prohibition days of the 1930’s.
Meantime, a Toronto lawyer says there’s reasonable grounds for a legal challenge to the sale of parts of Hydro One.
Steven Shrybman believes the provincial government has no authority to use the proceeds from such a sale.
He also feels the government’s reasons for privatizing the utility aren’t authorized under the Electricity Act.
His report was commissioned by the Canadian Union of Public Employees.
