Bike Safety Tips For March Break And Beyond

Spring break is here and that means more kids will be out and about on their bikes if the weather holds up.

Police will be on patrol to ensure everyone stays safe.

A reminder motorists must allow cyclers a safe space to ride on the roadway, as a bicycle has the same rights and responsibilities when on the road.

As we all know some of our roads aren’t in the best shape so the rider may have to use more of the road.

If you decide to pass a cyclist, ensure you pick a safe place and give them plenty of room without forcing them off the road.

Police ask that you drive defensively and use extra caution when travelling through residential and play areas as younger riders may dart out onto the street suddenly.

For cyclers, you must obey the same traffic laws as any other vehicle on the road.

Always make sure you wear a helmet as it’s mandatory and do regular inspections of your bicycle to ensure it’s working properly.

Make sure that your bike is the correct size for you.

When riding on the street, ride as close to the right side of the road as safely possible.

Police ask kids to signal their intentions and always ride in single file on the roadway.

Other tips for riders:

-Allow enough space between you and the bicycle ahead of you
-Do not take a passenger on your bike
-Wear bright clothing and be visible
-If you plan to ride at night, you are required to have a working headlight and a tail light on your bike
