Blasto in North

The Northwestern Health Unit is trying to raise awareness of a rare
disease called Blastomycosis.
The topic was raised in a recent Maclean’s Magazine article on
13-year-old Minaki resident Kevin Schneider.
Enivornmental Health Officer Lyle Wiebe says the young man is one of
very few people to contract the disease.

n020 runs: 21 sec. out…lawrence seaway.

Blasto can take 45 to 120 days to grow in a person’s body and can be
deadly if not treated.
Wiebe says symptoms include tightness in the chest and legions on the
skin that don’t heal.
