Reaction from the Dryden Council vote to maintain Municipal Police Service.
Chief Shayne MacKinnon says the issue has caused some distractions.
MacKinnon says the Municipal Service has a strong relationship with the OPP and its issues like this that erode that partnership and drives a wedge between them.
He is hoping that the issue is behind them and both sides can move forward together.
Peter Burns says he’s surprised and disappointed with the decision, noting a study would put an end to conflicting budget and staffing numbers.
Burns says the end result may have been maintaining the status quo, but its makes sense to investigate the alternatives, especially when it deals with a costly item.
He stresses these are tough economic times and the City should look at saving money.
Burns says its a silly decision.
Chief MacKinnon admits there are misconceptions on the finances of the Police Service.
MacKinnon is recommending that the Board post the audited budget on-line and notes the Municipal budget is available by visiting the City website.
Police Services Board Chair Bill Hovi says the focus remains on accountability.
Hovi stresses they will make sure taxpayer concerns are reflected in their future budgets.
The Police Service is held accountable to Dryden Council and the Dryden Police Board.
The OPP aren’t.
