The Fort Frances Muskies are this year’s NWOSSA boys’ curling champs.
The Jackson Marchant skipped rink defeated Kenora’s Beaver Brae Broncos, 10-5, in a tiebreaker to decide the championship at the Fort Frances Curling Club Tuesday afternoon.
The win propels the team to the all-Ontario provincial championship in North Bay later this month.
The Muskies lost to Michipicoten, 8-5, in their final round-robin game Tuesday morning, while the Broncos defeated Thunder Bay’s Superior Collegiate, 9-2, to leave the NorWOSSA entrants with identical 4-1 records and forcing the one-game showdown to decide the championship.
The Muskies beat the Broncos three games to one in the NorWOSSA championship and 7-6 in their NWOSSA opener on Sunday.
In the other boys’ game played in the morning draw, Hammarskjold got by Lake Superior High School from Terrace Bay 4-3.
St. Patrick High School from Thunder Bay defeated Red Lake 5-2 to clinch the girls’ championship, finishing with a perfect 5-0 record. They will represent northwestern Ontario at the OFSSA championship.
St. Ignatius High School, runners-up in the SSSAA championship, finished second with a record of 4-1.
The Fort Frances Muskies were edged 7-6 by Geraldton to finish with a 2-3 record.
Red Lake finished with a 1-4 record.
