A Conference Board of Canada report suggests mining is the future in northern Ontario.
The report says northern Ontario’s mining output will expand by 66% from 2011 to 2020, a compound annual growth rate of 5.8%.
Anja Jeffrey is the Director for the Centre of the North and she says an additional 7,000 workers will be needed by 2020 due to the growth.
Jeffrey points out the infrastructure needed to handle this growth isn’t in place right now.
She says it’s up to the industry and the government to work together to determine who is going to pay for the development.
Jeffrey says Ontario is in a good position to take advantage of mining growth.
She says the province and industry have both done a good job in improving relations with First Nations communities.
The information is contained in a new report entitled The Future of Mining in Canada’s North.
The Conference Board forecasts mining output from the North will grow by 91% from 2011 to 2020.
