Call For Government Help For Municipalities

The Ontario government is urging the Trudeau Liberals to help out the municipal sector during COVID-19.

Municipal Affairs Minister Steve Clark says the province has already added an additional $150 million to the existing $200 million fund.

Clark says they have supported the request from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario in their on-going campaign to get more financial help.

He stresses they will be at the table with their share but stresses the problem is very expensive and they need federal support if they want to help municipalities.

Liberal MPP Stephen Blais believes the province can do more.

Blais says “Cities and towns across Ontario are struggling under increased public health expenses due to COVID-19, lower user fees, property tax referrals and lower transit ridership. And due to provincial in-action their options are bleak.”
