Call Made To Properly Fund Child Services Group

The Canadian Union of Public Employees says the child welfare agency in Kenora-Rainy River is reeling thanks to a lack of provincial funding.
The union held a rally at MPP Sarah Campbell’s Dryden office yesterday and stressed the current funding formula doesn’t allow staff to do their job properly.
Campbell says the newly merged Kenora-Rainy River Child and Youth Services is severely underfunded.
She stresses the merger was done to help the province save money and notes now they are being punished for being proactive.
Campbell stresses the government needs to do more to protect children.
She notes the high cost of delivering services in a vast geographic area is a constant challenge.
In 2011 the highest share of children under 14-years-old in Ontario was found in the Kenora district at 21.4%.
Campbell will deliver dozens of paper valentine hearts to Premier Kathleen Wynne.
