Canada’s First Female Astronaut Visits Northwest

Canada’s first female astronaut is touring northwestern Ontario looking to inspire local women and youth.

Bondar says everyone has a role to play to protect the planet.

She notes we should be excited to help sustain the environment, given the natural beauty of this region.

Meantime, it’s a special anniversary for Bondar.

This year is the 25th anniversary of her trip to space where she spent eight days aboard a craft with her international male colleagues.

Speaking in Kenora and Thunder Bay, she stressed it was a surreal experience and something she will never forget.

She says she was proud to make it to space because of her gender and where she came from, Sault Ste. Marie.

Bondar also talked to students about a new challenge she is putting forward called the Ontario 150 Bondar Challenge.

The challenge asks students to take photos of the natural environment that will have an impact 100 years from now.
